"UNCLAIMED JACKPOT" OWNER STEPS FORWARD TO COLLECT $8.8 MILLION PRIZE!
August 20, 2008
Education is important to Greenwich resident Lynn Hagerbrant. She believes in informed decision-making, supporting initiatives to improve communities and in providing time and energies to efforts intended to support learning. And, she’s patient, as proven by her nearly nine-month wait to claim the $8.8 million CT Lottery Classic Lotto jackpot prize she won on November 23, 2007.

Hagerbrant presented the ticket to Lottery officials late on Monday, ending months of speculation about whether the jackpot ticket would go unclaimed, as has been the fate of a dozen other jackpots during the game’s 25-year history.

Aware that she owned the single winning Classic Lotto jackpot ticket for the drawing, Hagerbrant made a deliberate decision to delay filing a claim for her prize. Instead, she initiated discussions with professional estate planning and legal advisors, and considered strategies to ensure "added security" for her family. Once certain that her long-term plan had been solidified, Hagerbrant felt the time was appropriate to claim her windfall.

An occasional lottery player, Hagerbrant holds a positive view of Lottery play, noting, “I believe in Lottery as a way to provide support to worthwhile initiatives such as education in the communities. Proceeds from lottery sales go to support education, and that counts.”

Lottery proceeds are transferred to the General Fund on a weekly basis. In fiscal year 2008, sales of Lottery tickets in the state raised $283 million for the General Fund. Of that amount, approximately $64.3 million was directed to Libraries and Education Services, Higher Education, and the Department of Education. Remaining monies were allocated to support services and programs that impact the lives of Connecticut’s residents, including Public Health, Medicaid, Human Services, Mental Health and Addiction Services, Conservation, Regulations and Protection, and more.

Hagerbrant’s winning jackpot ticket was a Quick Pick purchase made at Greenwich Exxon on Putnam Avenue. Opting to take the one-time cash lump sum value of $5,430,424, Hagerbrant received a check in the amount of $3,801,297, the prize value after taxes were deducted.

Every time someone buys a $1 Classic Lotto ticket in Connecticut, approximately $.34 is returned to the General Fund. Another $.57 pays prizes to winners, and the remainder covers retailer commissions and operational costs incurred by the Lottery.

The overall chances of winning a prize in Classic Lotto are 1 in 39.3. The chance of winning the jackpot is 1 in approximately 7.1 million.
