OVERHEARD CONVERSATION LEADS TO LUCKY WIN
August 14, 2008
TOPEKA, KAN. – Last week, Lam Bach of Newton was standing in line at a local grocery store when he overheard two ladies talking about a $200,000 Powerball ticket that went unclaimed from the Aug. 1, 2007 drawing. The conversation reminded Bach that he had several tickets in his car he needed to check. After retrieving his tickets, he returned to the store. You can imagine his surprise when he realized he’d won a $10,000 cash prize playing Hot Lotto in the August 6, 2008 drawing.

“I had tickets from six months ago,” said Bach. “I’m terrible about checking my tickets even though I play every week. I’m always working and never think about it. If I hadn’t gone to the store to get water and overheard the ladies talking, I probably still wouldn’t have known I’d won $10,000,” said Bach.

According to Bach, his father played lottery games faithfully.

“My dad played lottery all the time,” said Bach. “He passed away a year ago. My birthday is Aug. 8 and his would have been Aug. 16. As I was checking my tickets, I was talking to my dad in my head. I told him it would be nice to win a prize and that it would make a great birthday present.”

Since Bach had never won such a large prize before, when the Check-a-Ticket machine read, “Claim at Lottery. Sign back of ticket,” he was confused.

“I couldn’t figure out why it kept saying that,” smiled Bach. “I asked a store clerk and she explained that it meant I had won over $599. I went home and looked up the winning numbers on the Lottery’s website and that’s when I discovered how much I’d won.”

Bach plans to purchase a newer vehicle for his wife with his prize money.

The winning ticket was purchased at QuikTrip 315, Located at 1500 S. Maize Rd. in Wichita.
