EXCITED YATES CENTER RESIDENT WINS $20,000

TOPEKA, KAN. – According to Sharon Douglas of Yates Center, she likes to play $2 Bonus Crossword instant scratch tickets after work to relax. Yesterday, Douglas purchased 10 tickets, but instead of relaxing, she was full of excitement when she revealed 10 words, winning a $20,000 grand prize on the fifth ticket she scratched.
“I thought I won $500,” said Douglas. “I lost track of how many words I found. When I went back and checked my ticket, I thought, ‘Oh, my goodness! I have ten words!’”
After checking her ticket several times, Douglas called her husband Leland to share the good news.
“I didn’t know what to think at first,” said Leland. “I knew she wasn’t joking. She was still excited later that evening when she went to play Bingo with one of her friends.”
“He told me I’d better settle down before I drove,” laughed Douglas. “I’ve won $500 and $100 a few times, but never $20,000. This is exciting!”
“I might start playing now,” smiled Leland.
Douglas and her husband, who have five children, 16 grandchildren, and four great grandchildren, plan to pay bills with some of their prize money. The rest, they said, will go into a savings account.
The winning ticket was purchased at Johnson’s General Store 22, located at 201 W. Mary St., in Yates Center.
