TWO $200,000 PRIZES CLAIMED BY LOGAN COUNTY FRIENDS
July 21, 2008
Nine winners of a $200,000 Powerball prize from the drawing held July 16, as well as the second winner of $200,000 from the same drawing are all either related to each other or have been life-long friends. And according to Lottery Director John Musgrave, both tickets were purchased from the same Marathon lottery retailer in Williamson.
David Barker of Chattaroy (Logan County), today claimed the $200,000 winning ticket he bought on July 2; he was joined by several winners of the second $200,000 prize won from a ticket bought by Paul Henson on July 16. Two members of that group are Barker’s nephews; one is his son; and one is his niece, a student at Marshall.
“It’s like this. About 12 to 15 years ago, there were six of us working at Kroger who decided to each pick a number and play the set every week. Over the years the group went up to 19, then disbanded. That was about the time I went off on my own and played the numbers for myself, but agreed to play a different Powerball number . . . since then, a couple of the original guys got a group of nine to go in together,” Barker said.
Barker said he and his wife decided to save their $200,000 prize “until we can think a spell about it.”
The nine $200,000 winners were each paid approximately $22,222, according to Musgrave. They included: Paul Henson of Chattaroy; Jim Henson of Chattaroy; Charles Henson, of Chattaroy; Kayla Henson, of Chattaroy; Eules Barker of Chattaroy; Judy Urpes of Williamson; Bennett Sammons of Chattaroy; Richard Goff of Huddy, KY; and James Helvey of Goody, KY.
Either working or retired, all the winners held no grudges about missing the jackpot by only the Powerball number. “David’s Powerball number was 10, ours was 9 and the one drawn was 17, but we’re all just grateful to get anything at all,” said Paul Henson.
As for spending the their prizes, Paul Henson said he knew of no definite plans. “Charles will get a steak dinner without complaining about the cost. Another guy might get a car.”
There was one exception. In Charleston to get the prize for her, the father of Marshall University student Kayla Henson said, “she has two choices: either quit college or use this for tuition.”
