EDMONDS MAN MAKES HISTORY BY WINNING LARGEST HIT 5 CASHPOT YET
July 9, 2008
OLYMPIA— Edmonds resident Joseph Portolese, a 71-year-old retired University of Washington data processor, says it seems as though he's living in a dream after finding out he won the largest Hit 5 cashpot since the game was introduced in March 2007 - $670,000.

After returning home from a weeklong trip to California with his wife Jean, Portolese came home to a stack of newspapers left on his porch. He was flipping through to catch up with the local news when he remembered the Hit 5 ticket in his wallet from the week before. He scanned through the paper to find the winning numbers. He checked the first three numbers and saw they matched, then he put down the paper and took a deep breath.

When he picked up the paper again he rescanned the numbers and saw all five numbers matched! He started to yell in excitement.

"I couldn't believe it, I had to get my wife to double check," Portolese laughed. "When she saw the numbers she threw her headband into the air in excitement and that's when I knew it was real."

The couple decided to share the good news with their family and friends one at a time.

"We decided to schedule time with our children and friends over the long weekend," Portolese said. "We wanted to tell each of them in person what happened so they could see from our facial expressions that it was real. Everyone has been ecstatic."

Portolese says while he's dreamt about winning for a long time, after celebrating with a nice breakfast he's not quite sure what he'll do with the rest of the money.

"We're going to Montana for a month to visit my mother-in-law," Portolese said. "I'm going to take that time to relax and really think about what we need. We just want to be sure we do the right thing."

Portolese won $670,000 when he matched the winning numbers 11-23-25-30-36 in the Saturday, June 28 Hit 5 drawing. He purchased his winning ticket at Top Food & Drug located at 21900 Highway 99 in Edmonds.
