NICKEL DEPOSITS RETURN INTO $1 MILLION PRIZE

Whenever Roy Van Gemert Sr. returns his bottles and cans, he parlays the nickels into instant tickets. His investment rewarded him with a $1 million grand prize on the Precious Gems instant game from the Massachusetts State Lottery.

Gemert received his first check for $50,000 before taxes today at headquarters in Braintree. Gemert of Westford bought the lucky ticket at Powers Wine on Wood Street in Lowell. The store will receive a $10,000 commission on the sale.

Precious Gems, a $5 game, features 10 instant prizes of $1 million. Overall, there are more than 6 million winning tickets in the game.
