LOTTERY RETURNS RECORD $34.75 MILLION DIVIDEND
July 7, 2008
Boise – For the fifth consecutive year, Idaho public schools and buildings will benefit from another record year by the Idaho Lottery. During a ceremony held at Nampa High School this morning in Nampa, Governor C. L. “Butch” Otter accepted a check from the Idaho Lottery for $34,750,000 on behalf of the people of Idaho. Lottery dividends are equally divided, providing funds for Idaho public schools and Idaho’s permanent building fund.

“Fun and financial support that´s what the Idaho Lottery is all about. Idaho schools and public buildings benefit from voluntary play, and a good number of those playing are from out of state," Governor Otter said. "The Idaho Lottery has stood for integrity and responsible play since the people got it started. Accountability and professionalism every day help ensure that everybody wins.”

“During the past fiscal year, Idaho has been a very lucky place to play the Lottery with 138 people winning more than $10,000 including three new millionaires. Today, our public schools and state buildings will benefit from this year’s success,” said Jeff Anderson, Idaho Lottery Director. “I would also like to extend a special note of gratitude to the over 880 retail partners in all areas of Idaho that offer Lottery products. Without their support and dedication, the entertainment we bring to the people of Idaho and the resulting dividend to the citizens would not be possible.”

New game launches of Hot Lotto and the Idaho $1,000,000 Raffle bolstered a good Powerball year that pushed sales in excess of $137,000,000, a new alltime record for Idaho’s 19 yearold Lottery. The popular Idaho $1,000,000 Raffle alone netted more than $600,000 in dividend revenue. This is the fourth year in the past five the Idaho Lottery has posted record revenues and the fifth consecutive year posting a record dividend.

By law, fiftypercent of the Lottery’s dividend benefits public schools in Idaho. Governor Otter presented an oversized check for $17.375 million to Nick Smith, Deputy Superintendent for School Support Services at the Idaho State Department of Education.

“As we strive to improve Idaho´s public education system, we at the State Department of Education appreciate the continued support of the many Idahoans who contribute to education through the Idaho Lottery every day,” said Smith. “The Idaho State Department of Education works to raise student achievement by meeting the needs of all students, and the money from the Idaho Lottery helps us move closer to this goal every year.”

Governor Otter also presented a dividend check worth $17.375 million to Mike Gwartney, Director for the Department of Administration. The remaining fiftypercent of the Lottery’s dividends are given to the Department of Administration who then administer distribution of funds for the improvements of Idaho’s permanent buildings.

“Utilizing Lottery proceeds to provide safe working environments for the State’s public work force and to improve the quality of every Idaho college campus are two keys to making Idaho successful in the future,” said Gwartney.

Nampa High School was the site of this year’s dividend announcement. The Nampa School District was installing a fire safety sprinkler system in their performing arts building using last year’s Lottery dividend dollars.

Since its inception on July 19, 1989, the Idaho Lottery has now returned $402 million to public education and buildings.
