MARSHALLTOWN MAN WINS $30,000

DES MOINES, Iowa - A Marshall County man recently won the top prize in a favorite Iowa Lottery scratch game.
Terry Mellows, 61, of Marshalltown won $30,000 playing the “Crossword” (purple newsprint) instant-scratch game. He purchased the winning ticket at Hy-Vee, 802 S. Center St. in Marshalltown and claimed his prize at Iowa Lottery headquarters in Des Moines.
“I scratched the ticket and counted the words,” he said about revealing a big-winning ticket. “Then I recounted the words and they came out to 10…. I took it home [and] told [my] wife. [I] had her sit down in case she wanted to faint or something.”
Mellows said he'll use his winnings to pay off bills. He and his wife are also planning a trip to Las Vegas next year for his Air Force reunion, where he said his prize money is “going to help there.”
Crossword (purple newsprint) is a $3 scratch game. Players win by uncovering at least three complete words in the ticket's puzzle. If a player uncovers 10 words, he/she wins $30,000. The overall odds of winning in the game are about 1 in 4.
