RACETRACK LICENSE FEES PAID TO BENEFIT SENIORS
July 1, 2008
Lottery Director John Musgrave today announced that $6.5 million in table games license fees has been paid by three West Virginia racetracks. Under the law governing table games, license fees are dedicated to in-home health care for seniors as administered by the West Virginia Bureau of Senior Services.

Musgrave said Wheeling Island Racetrack and Gaming Center and Mountaineer Racetrack and Gaming Resort have each paid a $2.5 million license fee, representing their first full year fee. The tracks paid their first $1.5 million partial-year fees last July 3.

In addition, Musgrave said Tri-State Racetrack & Gaming Center in Cross Lanes today received its first $1.5 million partial-year license to operate. He said track officials hope to begin card games in late September, "but as was the case with both northern tracks, we won't be rushed into an opening until I can give the Lottery Commission assurances that all requirements have been made."

Tri-State Executive Director of Casino Operations Rich Tesler said that as important as allowing the track to operate table games, the license opens the door to increased jobs and economic vitality. "We would really like to make an impact in the region that voted to give us the right to have table games. For that reason, we plan to give West Virginia residents first priority when it comes to our hiring more than 270 trained employees."

Tesler said training for Poker and Blackjack dealers is being held at WV State Community Technical College in Charleston. "We will reimburse the course costs of those we hire, who complete 90 days of service," Tesler said, noting that annual wages for dealers typically range from $30,000 to $45,000.

Tesler said that while 75 students have begun training for 94 Poker positions, only 40 students have applied for classes to fill the track's need for 180 Blackjack dealers. The class cost is $70 a week, approximately $490 for completion.
