$200,000 POWERBALL PRIZE AND $25,000 CASH25 PRIZES CLAIMED
June 18, 2008
Robert Melott of Smithfield has claimed a $25,000 top prize from the West Virginia Lottery’s Cash25 game, according to Lottery Director John Musgrave. Melott, 39, said he won the game’s top $25,000 prize in 1999 and won a $5,000 prize in 1996 from the former Daily Millions game. “I missed the million dollars by just one number; mine was a nine and the one drawn was an eight.”
A former cross-country pipeline construction worker, Melott said he suffered a debilitating stroke eight years ago. “They told me I would never walk, but I can get around on a walker . . . I would like to teach myself to jog. Since I can’t work, this money will go into my savings, both needed and appreciated.”
Melott said he bought four tickets for the June 10 drawing. “I played my own numbers, but they were a set of Easy Pick numbers I bought years ago that seemed sort of quirky, so I play them all the time.” The winning numbers were 2-4-8-10-17 and 21.
In addition, Musgrave said Alma Calloway, 80, of Glen Daniel, won a $200,000 Powerball prize from the drawing held April 19 from a ticket bought at Little General in Crab Orchard. “My husband went to buy the ticket for me, because it was storming outside.”
Calloway said she had to wait a few weeks to claim the prize. “I had to wait until my daughter could drive me to Charleston.” Noting that she always picks her own numbers, Calloway said she watched the live drawing and saw her numbers printed in the newspaper. “With both of them together, I figured my husband and I hadn’t seen them wrong. We’re going to pay off our new Cadillac.”
Calloway has seven grown children, 20 grandchildren, and 21 great grandchildren.
