SAN JOSE RESIDENT CLAIMS $148,743 MEGA MILLIONS PRIZE

SACRAMENTO – There was no time to waste for the owner of the winning California Lottery MEGA Millions ticket in Morgan Hill who claimed his prize Monday only three days after winning the $148,743.
James Boyd was driving to Riverside for his niece’s college graduation Friday when he made a stop to buy a MEGA Millions Quick Pick ticket. On Sunday, after his niece’s graduation, he went to a nearby retailer to check his ticket. To his surprise he had won a big prize. Boyd told Lottery officials that the cashier asked if he knew how much he had won and told him to keep guessing. He explained, “I thought I was on candid camera! It had to be a joke.” He added that he did not believe it until he saw the claim receipt.
Boyd, who considers himself lucky because he has survived lung cancer, will use his prize money to pay for his daughter’s college education and possibly take a trip to Jamaica. He said that his sister-in-law was right when she told him that he would be blessed in some way for helping her with much needed home improvements.
The winning ticket was purchased by Boyd at the Cochrane Food Mart & Carwash located at 851 Cochrane Road in Morgan Hill. The ticket hit the first five numbers drawn Friday night and then missed the Mega number. No one won the grand prize requiring a player to hit all six numbers. The next MEGA Million jackpot, which will be drawn Tuesday night, is worth $45 million.
