UNIVERSITY PLACE RESIDENT WINS $250,000 MEGA MILLIONS PRIZE

OLYMPIA— Scott M. Smith had a strong feeling he would be a winner when he purchased a Mega Millions lottery ticket recently. As it turns out, he was right on the money!
Smith, 44, was out with a friend when both men decided to stop by Meadow Food Mart in Tacoma to buy some Mega Millions tickets for the May 16 drawing. The Jackpot had reached $196 million, and Smith felt destined to win it all. As the men walked into the store, Smith told his friend, “I am going to win this time!” His friend was skeptical, pointing out that he had been saying that all year, but Smith replied, “No, I really mean it, I am going to win!”
His prediction came true. Though he didn’t win the Jackpot, he matched five of the six numbers – 06-11-39-46-47 – only missing the #26 Mega Ball. That netted him $250,000!
Smith discovered his win when he went to a gas station to have the retail clerk check his ticket. It was then that Smith knew he had won big as the clerk shouted, “You’re a lucky man! You’re a lucky man!”
“He was so excited he almost forgot to give the winning ticket back to me!” says Smith.
Smith agrees that he is in fact a lucky man. But he also admits to frequently misplacing things, so as soon as he had his winning ticket in hand, he gave it to someone he knew would keep it safe – his mom.
“I had already come close to losing the ticket before the drawing, so I knew I had to find a safe place to keep it until I found time to cash it in. My mom knows I’m always losing my money, and I knew I could trust her with it,” explained Smith.
Smith has big plans for the $250,000, including helping out some friends and donating $12,000 to his church. But he’s really looking forward to working on his yard – his pride and joy.
$250,000 is a lot of money, but Smith has a feeling it won’t be the last time he wins the lottery.
“I’ll probably win again,” he says. “If I believe it is going to happen, it will.”
Meadow Food Mart, where Smith purchased his winning ticket, is located at 5320 66th St. W. in Tacoma.
