GREENWOOD WOMAN WINS $200,000 PLAYING LAND ESCAPE
June 6, 2008
COLUMBIA, SC – On two hours sleep, Elaine Ginn settled into her SUV for an unplanned, though welcomed, trip to Columbia. The only thing she packed was a $10 instant ticket.

It was her second day on the road. The day before she traveled to Greenville, but on her way home to Greenwood she spotted a church sign that read in big black letters “GOD WILL PROVIDE.” Low on gas, Ginn pulled into a station where another sign caught her attention. This one announcing that the Quick Pantry #16 was the largest lottery retailer in Greenwood. She wondered if seeing the two signs was significant.

“Instead of getting $50’s worth of gas, I decided to get $40’s worth and a lottery ticket,” Ginn said.

She settled on a $10 Land Escape instant ticket, and before she could finish scratching her hand started to shake. Stunned, Ginn handed the ticket to the clerk and said, “Tell me I just didn’t.” He told her to go to Columbia. She just won $200,000.

“Driving here this morning, I just kept thinking I hope I don’t have a wreck and not get to spend any of it,” she said. “I was really careful.”

Ginn is putting her family first. Her mother needs a new driveway. She wants to help her daughter. Then there are the two grandsons to consider. Her daughter has already warned her not to go out a buy a bunch of toys. But Ginn will definitely find some way to spoil the boys.

With her garden already producing squash and tomatoes, Ginn is seriously considering buying herself a garden tiller. On the drive to Columbia, she also thought about using some of her winnings to start her computer business back up, this time with money to put toward local advertising.

“This means everything,” Ginn, who retired from Pfizer Pharmaceuticals a little over a year ago, said.

“Last night we went to Red Lobster. I just had the money in my pocket,” she said. “Tonight we may eat out again.” But before going out to celebrate, an exhausted Ginn will probably squeeze in a quick nap.
