RALEIGH - From instant scratch-off tickets to Powerball and “Carolina Cash 5,” six lucky lottery players claimed prizes totaling more than $1.5 million since Friday. For James Coe Sr. of Winston-Salem, Powerball was his lucky game. Five correct numbers and an extra dollar to Power Play his Powerball ticket won him $800,000!
Coe bought one $2 ticket for the May 21 Powerball drawing and matched all five white balls. The normal payout for this combination is $200,000, but since Coe Power Played the ticket and the Power Play number was 4 for the drawing, it multiplied his winnings to $800,000.
Coe says he will take care of his daughter and mother with his winnings. He also wants to build a new garage for himself. Coe purchased his winning ticket at Wilco on South Main Street in Winston-Salem.
Albert Woelbl of Randleman reinvested some of his winnings from the “$100 Million Cash Spectacular” instant scratch-off ticket he had purchased to buy a “Carolina Cash 5” ticket for the May 16 drawing. His ticket matched all five white balls drawn, winning him the top prize of $346,535.
Woelbl says the first thing he will do with his winnings is to fill up his car with gas. He says his wife wants to go to Graceland, so he’ll take her there with some of the money. Woelbl purchased his winning ticket at Ready Mart on North Fayetteville Street in Asheboro.
Nikeya Peterson of Durham got just one “Big Ol’ Bucks” ticket, but that was enough because it turned out to be worth $175,000! Peterson says she will use the money to pay bills and take a vacation. She also plans to invest some of the winnings. Peterson’s winning ticket was purchased at Bragtown BP #130 on Roxboro Road in Durham.
The Goudarzis’ ticket matched four out of five white balls plus the Powerball. The Power Play wheel landed on 10, which increased their prize from $10,000 to $100,000. The number 10 was on the Power Play wheel in April as a special promotion. The winning ticket was purchased at Lowes Food #202 on Oleander Drive in Wilmington.
The two sisters who are currently in college plan to use their winnings to help pay for college. Rebecca also wants to buy a new computer and Roxanna says she plans to buy a guitar.
Harvie Hagans of Lumberton first won $50 playing the “Green and Gold” instant scratch off game. He went in to claim his prize at the retailer and used $5 of his winnings to purchase another ticket and won $100,000!
Hagans says he couldn’t sleep after he realized he had won the game’s top prize. He plans to use the money to pay bills and make home improvements. He purchased his winning ticket at Perritt’s Convenience Mart on Pinelog Road in Lumberton.
In the Saturday, May 24 “Carolina Cash 5” drawing, one ticket matched all five white balls and is worth $106,057! The ticket was sold at Family Foods of Corapeake on N.C. 32 North in Corapeake. The ticket has yet to be claimed.
In the Saturday, May 24, Powerball drawing, a total of 37,091 North Carolina Powerball players won prizes, ranging from $200 down to $3 for a total payout in prizes worth $213,972. No one matched all five white balls and the Powerball to win the jackpot, so the jackpot amount for the Wednesday, May 28, Powerball drawing is $25 million.
The North Carolina Education Lottery (NCEL) has paid out more than $6.5 million total in instant scratch-off ticket prizes since Thursday, May 22. Also since Thursday, “Carolina Cash 5” players have won nearly $229,000 and “Carolina Pick 3” players have won more than $1.3 million in prizes.
