DES MOINES, Iowa - A central Iowa man recently won a significant prize playing Powerball®!
Dan Jones of Ackworth won a $200,000 prize in the May 14 Powerball drawing. Jones purchased his ticket at Hy-Vee, 910 N. Jefferson in Indianola.
Jones said, “I was in getting gas, having my tickets checked and I was joking around with the attendant saying I needed enough to pay for my gas. She started shaking and the next thing I knew I had a pretty big ticket!”
Jones, 48, is self-employed and plays a couple dollars each week on lottery. Jones matched five of the numbers, but missed the Powerball. He was still in disbelief that he had come so close to winning the jackpot.
“I didn't know if it was real or not - until now!” he said.
Jones claimed his prize at Iowa Lottery headquarters in Des Moines and plans to use his winning to pay off bills.
“It couldn't have come at a better time,” Jones said.
The winning Powerball numbers for the May 14 drawing were: 19-21-29-32-46. The Powerball was 32. The Power Play multiplier was 2.
If Jones had chosen to play the Power Play®, he would have won $400,000.
Players can increase their prizes with the Power Play (except the jackpot) up to five times. The cost is $1 per play.
Just before the Powerball numbers are drawn, the Power Play wheel is spun. Slots on the wheel list the numbers 2 through 5, indicating the amount prizes (except the jackpot) will be multiplied if that number is drawn.
Despite his recent win, Jones plans to continue playing Powerball.
“I already got tickets in my pocket!” he said.
