SEATTLE MAN WINS $1 MILLION ON SCRATCH
May 12, 2008
SEATTLE— Anyone who’s faced the decision of how to care for their aging parent knows it’s a agonizing dilemma. But for one Seattle man, Mother’s Day will be special this year. A Lottery prize has just made his life, and his mother’s future a little better.
Micheal McManus of Seattle says if he’d won the Lottery a few years ago, it would have been a different story. “I would have probably bought a hot car and some other toys,” he laughs. “But now, I’m a little older and things are different.”
McManus became Washington’s 582nd millionaire Wednesday when he claimed $1 million on a Washington Millionaire II Scratch ticket. The prize, McManus says, will allow his 84 year old mother to stay in her home. “My mom lives in a condo, and this means she can stay in the condo. She’ll never face going into a nursing home.”
A supervisor at a Seattle cargo company, McManus bought the ticket at Mercer Mini Mart on Mercer Street in the lower Queen Anne neighborhood of Seattle. “They’re like family,” McManus said of the retailer and employees there. “I go in there all the time and they’re terrific!” The Seattle man purchased his ticket almost a week ago and scratched it on the spot, but waited to speak to a financial planner before coming in to claim. McManus collected his winnings in the morning, deposited his check at his bank and headed back to his job that afternoon.
Mercer Mini Mart received a $10,000 Retail Selling Bonus for their efforts. The lucky store also sold a $4.2 million willing Lotto ticket in 1986.
