QUICK GROCERY STORE VISIT BRINGS HOME THE BACON

Scott Merriman of Fredericksburg offered to run an errand for his wife while she made shepherd’s pie for the family. While he was buying corn at the grocery store, he picked up a Mega Millions ticket. The next day, he found out there was one Virginia winner and he had the matching numbers. Without telling his wife, he went back to the store to make sure he really had won $250,000.
When Mr. Merriman got home and told his wife, she said, “I’m glad we needed corn!” He felt the same way.
His ticket matched the first five numbers and only missed the Mega Ball number. The winning numbers for that drawing were 3-22-31-48-54 and the Mega Ball number was 9.
He purchased the ticket for the April 22, 2008, drawing at Super Giant, located at 550 Celebrate Virginia Parkway in Fredericksburg. He selected his own numbers.
Mr. Merriman said he intends to invest the winnings in education funds for his children.
