SAN FRANCISCO RESIDENT CLAIMS $165,028 MEGA MILLIONS PRIZE

SACRAMENTO – The winner who bought a MEGA Millions ticket in San Francisco came forward Wednesday, 12 days after winning the $165,028 prize.
John Grimes was traveling the night of the April 18 MEGA Millions draw. Instead of seeing the results on TV or checking the California Lottery’s Web site, he stopped at a California Lottery retailer to learn the winning numbers. The retailer reviewed John’s ticket at the store’s terminal and then handed John a receipt that said the ticket was worth more than $599. Quickly, John made his way to a hotel room. There he logged onto the California Lottery Web site to learn the exact value of his winning ticket. He immediately called his mother, who jokes with him that he is unlucky, because she seems to always win every door prize.
John bought the winning ticket at Discount Cigarettes located at 626 Kearney Street in San Francisco. He spent $10 on a California Combo Play -- a single transaction of $5 of SuperLOTTO Plus Quick Picks and $5 of MEGA Millions Quick Picks. One of the MEGA Millions tickets matched five out of six numbers.
To a Lottery representative John described the conversation he had with his mother the night he discovered his big win: “How much do you think I won? She first said $20, then $30 and then $40. Then I yelled out higher!” He continued, “Being that she jokes that I’m always the unlucky one in the family, it was a huge surprise for her that I was that lucky.”
What will John do with his new wealth? “I’m going to use my prize to offset the construction cost of a home I’m building,” said John.
