SALEM MAN FINDS A $250,000 LOTTERY TICKET IN HIS CAR JUST DAYS BEFORE THE TICKET EXPIRES!
May 7, 2008
Imagine driving around for five and a half months, not knowing your car contains a piece of paper worth $250,000. That is exactly what happened to Thomas Broyles of Salem.
Mr. Broyles bought a ticket for the November 2, 2007, Mega Millions drawing. He stuck the ticket in the glove compartment and promptly forgot about it. He didn’t know that the ticket matched the first five winning numbers to win a quarter of a million dollars.
“It fell behind some papers in the glove compartment,” he told Virginia Lottery officials when he claimed his prize. “I couldn’t believe it.”
He found the ticket in the nick of time. When he claimed his prize on April 25, the ticket was just five days away from expiring. By law, Virginia Lottery tickets expire 180 days after the drawing.
He bought the ticket at Stop In Food, located at 2375 Roanoke Street in Christiansburg. The winning numbers for that drawing were 1-3-34-49-52 and the Mega Ball number was 19. If he had just matched that final number, he would have split a jackpot estimated at $75 million. Instead, he was one of just eight people nationwide to win Mega Millions’ second highest prize in that drawing – and the only one in Virginia.
Mr. Broyles told Lottery officials he intends to invest his winnings.
