ATLANTA – A Valdosta postal worker is carried away with excitement. Willie Newberry, 55, was randomly selected in the April 4 Georgia's Millionaire Club drawing, winning $5,000 along with a chance to win $10 million.
Newberry was at home at the time of the televised drawing but did not discover his win until the following day while on his job.
"My wife called and said that I'd won a lottery prize," he said. "I thought it was an April Fools' joke."
Newberry has worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier for eight years. He and his wife, Vandella, have five adult children and five grandchildren.
Georgia's Millionaire Club weekly drawings are held in conjunction with the instant game Georgia's $500 Million Club. Each weekly Georgia's Millionaire Club winner will receive $5,000 and become a finalist in the Extra Chance $10 Million Grand Prize Drawing.
"$10 million is the kicker," Newberry exclaimed. "If I win, I would definitely retire."
