YOUNG WOMAN STRIKES IT LUCKY TWICE IN ONE DAY
April 28, 2008
OLYMPIA — Jessica Gates of Shoreline never imagined that her stressful month would turn into one of the best of her life. Things started looking up for her the other day when she found $40 in her driveway as she was leaving for work.
“My boyfriend and I have this thing when we find money,” Gates said. “We always buy Lottery tickets, because we figure if we were lucky to find the money maybe we’ll be lucky again!”
Gates turned out to have much better luck than she expected. When she arrived to work at Chevron, she saw the Fantasy 5S Scratch ticket and decided to spend $20 for four tickets.
“I bought four tickets and thought the other $20 could go toward a nice lunch,” Gates laughed. “I scratched the first three and saw nothing, but then I scratched the last one and saw I won, but didn’t scratch off the amount. I figured whatever it was I could buy an even nicer lunch.”
When Gates uncovered the prize $100,000 prize she thought she misread it. She asked a co-worker to confirm.
“I handed it to a co-worker and he said ‘Jessica, I think you just won $100,000!’” Gates recalled. “I’ve never fainted in my life, but I’ll tell you my knees felt just like noodles when he said it out loud!”
After Gates realized she won she tried calling her boyfriend 40 times, as well as other friends and family, but no one answered. She was so eager to share the good news that she called her boss, who was the first to hear the news.
“No one believed me when I first told them, not even my boyfriend,” said Gates. “I told him he better believe it, because now we can really afford to start looking for a new home.”
Gates plans on putting her winnings toward a new home, and she wants to buy the flat screen TV she’s been eyeing.
Gates purchased her winning ticket from Wallingford Chevron located at 1420 N 45 th St. in Seattle.
