MAINTENANCE WORKER WANTS TO GIVE BACK
April 28, 2008
OLYMPIA — Tam Vo, a 61-year-old school maintenance worker from Renton , started his day out as normal. He dropped by his local grocery store to pick up a few necessities. When he reached the counter, he noticed his Mega Millions ticket in his wallet that he had bought just the day before. He walked over to the service counter to check it and as he slid the ticket through the Lottery Check-A-Ticket machine, the screen began to flash.

“It was unbelievable, I saw it starting to light up,” Vo laughed. “They told me that I could collect my $250,000 from the Lottery office!”

While Vo is thrilled he won the second tier $250,000 prize in Mega Millions, it’s not for run of the mill reasons. His family plans on donating some of his winnings to a nonprofit organization in Vietnam.

Vo grew up in Vietnam , and since moving here several years ago, he’s been looking for a way to give back to his native country. Winning the Mega Millions prize provided him with the perfect opportunity.

“I’m just so excited, I still can’t believe it,” Vo said. “We’re all thrilled to be able to help others.”

While Vo plans to give some of his winnings away, he plans to spend some of the money on himself.

“I have been wanting to buy a new car,” Vo said. “Now it looks like I can!”

Vo purchased his winning ticket at Safeway located at 200 S 3 rd St in Renton. He won the Mega Millions second tier prize from the April 22 drawing when he matched five numbers, 03-22-31-48-54, only missing the Mega Ball number – 09.
