TWO POWERBALL PLAYERS SCORE $100,000 PRIZES BY CHOOSING POWER PLAY
April 17, 2008
PUEBLO – Two lucky Powerball players turned $10,000 prizes into $100,000 by choosing the Power Play option in Wednesday night's drawing. The two players matched four of five numbers in the drawing, plus the Powerball number – a combination which usually yields a $10,000 prize. Selecting the Power Play option, however, multiplies a player’s winnings by whatever number the Power Play wheel hits, normally ranging from 2 to 5. As part of a special promotion lasting until April 30, the '5' on the wheel has been replaced by a 10 and that’s where the wheel landed in Wednesday's drawing.
"We’re thrilled that our players are benefiting from this promotion," said Colorado Lottery Director Peggy Gordon. "We hope that more of our customers get the chance to experience what it feels like to multiply their winnings by 10 before the end of the month."
One of the $100,000 tickets was sold at Charlie L's Pub in Loveland, while the other was sold at a Safeway in Aurora. The two $100,000 winners weren’t the only ones who saw their prizes grow by 10 thanks to the Power Play promotion. There were 31 players who matched four of five numbers and turned $100 prizes into $1,000 with the Power Play option. An additional 31 players matched three of five numbers plus the Powerball number and selected Power Play, giving them $1,000 prizes instead of $100 prizes. More than 1,500 players turned $7 into $70 with Power Play.
Powerball players pay an extra dollar to pump up their winnings through Power Play. The Power Play option can apply to all winnings except the Powerball jackpot.
Since there was no jackpot winner in Wednesday's Powerball drawing, the jackpot rises to $105 million for Saturday's drawing. The cash value of that jackpot is estimated at $53.7 million.
