A local convenience store and gas station in Jackson County is considered a very lucky spot by one of its regular patrons. Customer William Crowl has purchased not one, but two, winning Missouri Lottery Scratchers tickets at Phillips 66, 3120 SW State Route 7, in Blue Springs. The latest win landed the 54-year-old the first $1 million top prize on a “50X The Cash” Scratchers ticket. It comes less than a year after he won $10,000 on a “$1,000 Frenzy” ticket he also purchased there.

In addition to staying true to his lucky location, Crowl noted a strategy he feels contributed to his lucky streak.

“I just heard that the best way to do this is to buy the same ticket all the time. So I basically got stuck on one ticket, and I just kept buying it,” he explained while redeeming his winning ticket at the Lottery’s Independence office on March 10. “I don’t bounce around to different tickets. Pick a ticket that you want to try on, and just keep playing it. That’s what I did.”

Crowl said emotions immediately following his win ran rather high.

“I could feel myself getting very, very excited, and I had to calm myself down,” he said. “I told myself, ‘Breathe. Breathe. It’s OK.’”

After enough time had passed for the news to sink in, Crowl, a hospital grounds crew worker, decided to take his time and consider his options before redeeming the winning ticket.

“I wanted to wait and think about what I needed to do before I came here,” he shared. “It was driving my wife nuts, though.”

Top-prize winners on the “50X The Cash” Scratchers ticket have the option of receiving $50,000 per year for 20 years or taking a lump-sum cash payment of $680,000. Crowl opted for the cash payment and “was thinking maybe about buying a car” with his winnings.

“50X The Cash” began sales on Dec. 27, 2016. The $10 game still has more than $27.6 million in remaining prizes, including two more million-dollar top prizes and 12 prizes of $100,000.

In the most recent fiscal year, players in Jackson County won more than $65.3 million in Missouri Lottery prizes. An additional $52.7 million from Lottery proceeds went to education programs in the county, and $6.9 million was paid in retailer incentives.
