Normally, you wouldn’t think a trip to the emergency room is a good thing, but in Ricky Fortune’s case, it led to him winning $77,000 in the Virginia Lottery.
The Stafford man said he fell while working at his job in the home improvement industry. It took several hours for him to be treated in the emergency room and sent home. While on the way home, he decided to stop and buy 20 Pick 4 tickets for the February 15 night drawing, all with the same four-digit combination: 1-7-4-4.
Sure enough, that four-number combination was drawn, making all 20 plays winners.
He wagered “exact order” when he bought 10 of the tickets. Each of those won the game’s top prize of $5,000. For the other 10 tickets, he wagered “50/50” to win $2,700 each.
He bought all 20 plays at Fas Mart, 2142 Jefferson Davis Highway in Stafford.
“It’s not a million, but it feels like it!” he said as he claimed his prize. “I’m overjoyed but in a humble way.”
Pick 4 drawings are held daily at 1:59 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. The chances of matching all four digits in exact order are 1 in 10,000.
When it comes to education, the Virginia Lottery is game. In fact, it’s the reason we play. We generate more than $1.6 million per day for Virginia’s K-12 public schools. Operating entirely on revenue from the sale of Lottery products, the Virginia Lottery generated a record $588 million for Virginia’s public schools in Fiscal Year 2016.
