Leo O’Dea is retired and splits his time between his full-time home of Vermillion and his occasional home of Hot Springs. Last week, he was thankful to be out west because the Dakota Cash with EZ Match ticket he purchased at Battle Mountain Convenience in Hot Springs turned out to be a jackpot winner.
O’Dea today claimed his $32,541 prize at the Rapid City Lottery office. The store will receive a $1,627 bonus for the sale.He usually plays nearly all of South Dakota’s lotto games and alternates between picking his own numbers and purchasing Quick Pick tickets. This time the numbers he’s been using for the last 15 years came through for the win.
“I usually use my birthdate and my daughter’s birthdate for Powerball but I decided to use them for Dakota Cash for the Nov. 23 drawing. I’m glad I did,” O’Dea said.
O’Dea knew shortly after the drawing that he had the jackpot-winning ticket by checking the numbers on the Lottery website via his phone. Then he used the phone to share the news with his daughter.
“At first, all she said was ‘You’re kidding’. Then I went against my own rules about telling people right away that I won a jackpot and called some other people to tell them,” he said.
Although the win is still fresh, he’s already thought about what to do with the winnings, planning to pay off some bills and help his daughter with her college expenses.
Dakota Cash is played and won only in South Dakota. The jackpot currently sits at $20,000 for the next drawing on Wed., Nov. 30, 2016.
