John Kelly’s daily break from work consists of stopping at his favorite store to pick up some Lottery scratch-off tickets. The Metro Rail Road conductor followed his normal routine one day last month and purchased a $2,5000 a Week for Life scratch-off ticket at Chunnu News on 3rd Avenue in Manhattan and his life would never be the same. The ticket he purchased turned out to be a $2,500,000 winner.
“I bought one ticket and I didn’t win,” explained the father of three. “I’ve been playing a little more lately because I have two kids in college and one in high school. I decided to buy another ticket which was lucky number 7 so I had to play it.”
The lucky number seven turned out to be luckier than Kelly imagined. “I scratched the ticket in the store. When I saw it was a winner I shoved it in my pocket and ran out of the store.” Kelly immediately called his wife Kathleen to tell her the good news. “I couldn’t believe what he was telling me. All I kept thinking was no way,” she explained.
Kelly went back to work, but didn’t stay long. “I couldn’t keep it in my pocket for the rest of my shift so I asked my supervisor to leave. I still didn’t think it was real so I stopped at a store to scan it. The terminal said ‘Big Winner’ and that’s when I knew it was real.”
Kelly opted to split his lump-sum prize with his wife, with each receiving a net check totally $711,806 after required withholdings.
Kelly says it feels amazing to win the Lottery. “I woke up and it was like a dream. This is a game changer.”
The Kelly’s plan to use the winnings to pay for their children’s college education and save the rest for retirement.

About the New York Lottery
The New York Lottery continues to be North America’s largest and most profitable Lottery, contributing $3.30 billion in fiscal year 2015-2016 to help support education in New York State. The Lottery’s contribution represents 14 percent of total state education aid to local school districts.
New York Lottery revenue is distributed to local school districts by the same statutory formula used to distribute other state aid to education. It takes into account both a school district’s size and its income level; larger, lower-income school districts receive proportionately larger shares of Lottery school funding.
