Lots of co-workers play the Missouri Lottery together as a group, especially when the jackpots are large. A group of 10 workers in the floral department of the Schnucks warehouse went together to buy tickets for the June 28 Mega Millions drawing and won $5,000. Split 10 ways, each of the group members got a $500 bonus. Rebecca Brendel said her dad, David Brendel, is the team captain.

“He’s the one who goes out and gets them (tickets) every week, collects all the money and keeps us in line,” said Brendel.

She began by describing their players group.

“Warehouse workers, floral designers, plus me and my dad are both drivers,” she said.

Brendel went on to say the group usually plays Mega Millions, but they will play Powerball if the jackpot is high. The Mega Millions jackpot on June 28 was $390 million. The co-workers won $5,000 by matching four white-ball numbers and the Mega Ball. The winning Mega Millions numbers on June 28 were:  15, 17, 20, 35, 55, and the Mega Ball was 7.

David Brendel found out they were winners the next day when he returned to check the tickets at the QuikTrip store where he usually buys for the group. At first he thought they had won $50, as they had for the first time a few weeks ago.

“He went up to the desk, and the clerk told him it was much more,” said Brendel.

Brendel said she would use the prize money to “take her dogs to the vet.” She wasn’t sure know how others planned to spend it. Not all members wished to share their names, but the 10 winners included co-workers James Ford of Florissant, plus Cynthia Harris Barnett and Alfred Magnin of St. Louis.

Now that the Powerball jackpot is approaching a half-billion dollars, the group is adding an extra dollar for Powerball tickets. They hope for the jackpot, but another payout like this one would suit them fine.
“Any win is good,” said Brendel.

Mega Millions is a multi-state Draw Game with jackpots that start at $15 million and grow until someone wins. For an extra $1 at the time of purchase, players can add Megaplier to a ticket to win larger non-jackpot prizes.
