Darlene Estes, of Fountain Run, almost always stops by her local convenient store on her way to work to buy Kentucky Lottery scratch-off tickets. On Tuesday, that stop paid off in a big way.
Estes chose to play a Bluegrass Blowout ticket at Jr Foods #816 in Scottsville. After scratching off the winning number 44 and matching it to one of her numbers she found out pretty quickly that she’d won the game’s top prize.
“I just couldn’t believe it,” Estes said. “When I took the ticket up to the clerk to have it checked, I told the man behind me that he might have to catch me,” Estes told lottery officials. The clerk did confirm that she’d won $150,000 on the $10 ticket. Estes called her supervisor of the Dollar General Store where she works to let them know she wasn’t going to be able to make it in.
Estes traveled to Louisville yesterday with her son to cash in her winning ticket. She walked out of lottery headquarters with a check for $103,500, after taxes.
“I’m just so glad I won so I can help family,” Estes said. She also plans to buy a new car.
