Friday the 13th is considered an unlucky day in Western superstition. However, you’ll never be able to accuse William Rogers of having a case of “Paraskevidekatriaphobia” (the fear of Friday the 13th). No sir! The 67-year-old from the San Gabriel Valley took his chances on Friday, May 13 and won a very lucky top prize amount of $555,555 on a Power 5’s Scratchers® game that he purchased in Monrovia (Los Angeles County).
“I was just sitting at my brother’s house and a friend of his was going across the street to [get some beer] and I gave him $5 and said to pick me up a $5 Scratchers,” Rogers explained. “I scratched it and told them that I won. My brother said, ‘nah!’ I said, ‘Yea I did!’ so they took it over to the store [to have it scanned] to make sure. I wouldn’t go, I was too nervous!” he added with a big laugh.
Rogers said he’d actually gone over to his brother’s house to see if his brother wanted to go with him to the race track (Santa Anita) again. They’d gone the day before; and get this – Rogers shared that he won $800 at the track, either the day before or that night on Friday the (May) 13th. All of this winning has made his memory a bit fuzzy on the specifics!
And check this out: No wonder Rogers doesn’t have any reservations trying his luck on Friday the 13th. “I’ve looked at that day differently ever since I went to Vegas and won $2,500 there on a Friday the 13th! It’s just another day actually,” he said with a laugh. A win in Las Vegas, a win playing the California Lottery and possibly a win at the race track – all on a day the superstitious consider unlucky. Wow! Rogers doesn’t even consider himself that lucky. “Not really!”
The more than half a million dollars Rogers won on his Power 5’s Scratchers is the most he’s ever won playing the California Lottery. The retiree says he’s a loyal player who enjoys routinely purchasing Scratchers at his local 7-Eleven in Duarte where he stops every day to buy a Big Gulp. As for what he plans on doing with his $555,555, Rogers admits the guy who bought his winning ticket has one idea: “He says I have to buy him beer for months and months!”
Rogers’ winning $555,555 Power 5’s Scratchers game was purchased at Al’s Liquor, which is located at 412 West Duarte Road in Monrovia.
The Power 5’s Scratchers are part of the Lottery’s continued effort to give out more prizes, create more winners and earn more money for California public education. For more information on the game and how to play, click here.
