Truck Driver Kenneth Shumway of Colonie decided to buy a ticket for the January 9 Powerball drawing and then asked his fellow drivers if they wanted in. It was the first time the co-workers had ever pooled their money together to buy Lottery tickets.
“I think some of them knew I was pretty lucky on the scratch-offs so they wanted in. Others just wanted a shot at something that big,” Shumway said.
Shumway threw in $5 and then collected the same from 39 other drivers. He purchased 100 tickets from the Stewart’s Shop at 2931 Route 9 in Valatie and then left photocopies of the tickets in the common area at work along with a list of everyone who contributed.
Shumway used his laptop to check the winning numbers for that night’s drawing, which were: 16 – 19 – 32 – 34 – 57 and Powerball 13.
“I looked for the Powerball number first and only had it in a couple of places. I started checking the other numbers and there they were on the second ticket I looked at; we had all of the first five numbers.”
Shumway said after realizing the ticket was worth $1,000,000, his wife put it in a plastic bag and hid it in a sack of flour until the two could transfer it to a safety deposit box.
Before claiming the prize, the 40 winners opted to form a Limited Liability Corporation to make disbursing the prize money easier. In addition to Shumway, the 35 men and four women who comprise the 40 Winners LLC include:

“I already cleared away the trees in my backyard to make room for a pool,” he said adding, “It was the best $5 I ever spent.”

About the New York Lottery
The New York Lottery continues to be North America’s largest and most profitable Lottery, contributing $3.11 billion in fiscal year 2014-2015 to help support education in New York State. The Lottery’s contribution represents 14 percent of total state education aid to local school districts.
New York Lottery revenue is distributed to local school districts by the same statutory formula used to distribute other state aid to education. It takes into account both a school district’s size and its income level; larger, lower-income school districts receive proportionately larger shares of Lottery school funding.
