JUST DAYS BEFORE CHRISTMAS, CLOUCESTER POINT MAN WINS $5 ILLION PRIZE
December 26, 2015
“I just walked in, picked out the right ticket and won.”

That’s how Johnathan Hirtenstein of Gloucester Point described how he won the $5 million top prize in the Virginia Lottery’s $5,000,000 Cash Blowout Scratcher game.

“It feels amazing,” he said as he claimed his prize just three days before Christmas. “It just doesn’t happen to many people.”

Mr. Hirtenstein, who works as a caterer, bought the winning ticket at Stop & Go, 1505 George Washington Memorial Highway in Gloucester Point.

He had the choice of taking the full $5 million prize over 30 years or a one-time cash option of $2,686,965 before taxes. He chose the cash option. The store received a $10,000 bonus from the Lottery for selling the winning ticket.

Mr. Hirtenstein said he plans to invest his winnings.

“I never thought I’d win anything,” he said.

$5,000,000 Cash Blowout features prizes ranging from $20 up to $5 million. Mr. Hirtenstein is the second person to claim a top prize in this game, which means two $5,000,000 tickets remain unclaimed. The chances of winning the top prize in this game are 1 in 1,836,000. The chances of winning any prize are 1 in 2.66.

When it comes to education, the Virginia Lottery is game.  In fact, it’s the reason we play.  We generate more than $1.4 million per day for Virginia’s K-12 public schools.  Operating entirely on revenue from the sale of Lottery products, the Virginia Lottery generated nearly $534 million for Virginia’s public schools in Fiscal Year 2015. We know the Virginia Lottery is a great place to work, but don’t take our word for it. The Richmond Times-Dispatch named the Lottery a 2015 Top Workplace.
