WASHINGTO'S LOTTERY AND DEPARTMENT OF VETERANS AFFAIRS LAUNCH FIRST ANNUAL HOMETOWN HEROES RAFFLE
August 30, 2011
On Labor Day, Washington's Lottery and the Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA) will launch the first annual Hometown Heroes Raffle to support veterans across the state. Every $10 raffle ticket purchased benefits the WDVA's Veterans Innovations Program, which provides crisis and emergency relief, as well as education, training, and employment assistance for Washington veterans returning from post-9/11 conflicts.

"The Hometown Heroes Raffle is an incredible opportunity to honor and support our state's veterans, and we are proud to partner with the Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs on this important effort," said Bill Hanson, Director of Washington's Lottery. "These brave men and women have selflessly served here at home and abroad, and our state recognizes that sacrifice."

Legislation introduced by state Sen. Steve Conway, D-South Tacoma, and signed into law by Gov. Chris Gregoire directs Washington's Lottery to hold an annual statewide raffle to help fund the Veterans Innovations Program, administered by the WDVA.

"As a result of the Hometown Heroes Raffle, the Veterans Innovations Program will receive the critical funding needed to support the unique needs of Washington's veterans," Conway said. "Without the dedicated efforts of the Veterans Legislative Coalition, Washington's Lottery and the Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs, this tremendous effort would not be possible. This is truly an opportunity for Washingtonians to serve those who have served our communities, and I'm very proud of and excited for the Hometown Heroes Raffle."

Since its creation in 2006, the Veterans Innovations Program has helped more than 800 National Guard, Reserve and active duty service members and their families.

"The Veterans Innovations Program assists veterans who are returning to school, finding job training and getting back on their feet after long, difficult deployments," said WDVA Director John Lee. "Through the Hometown Heroes Raffle, the people of Washington will be helping to provide important support to a critical program aiding veterans and their families."
