THANKSGIVING EXTRA SPECIAL FOR NELSON COUNTY COUPLE AFTER WINNING $40,000 ON SCRATCH-OFF
November 28, 2011
Charles "Ernie" Piles III, 33, of Bardstown never expected his Thanksgiving to go the way it did when he woke up that morning. He'd gone to 150 Quick Stop in Bardstown to pick up beer for later in the day. When at the store, he cashed in a $3 scratch-off and purchased another $3 and $5 scratch-off ticket.
Ernie took the tickets home and gave the $3 ticket to his wife Sammie to scratch-off while he scratched off the $5 Diamonds & Pearls Doubler ticket.
He scratched off the front and said to his wife, "Well, I lost." She said, "But you haven't scratched the back." Not realizing the ticket was double-sided; Ernie turned the ticket over and scratched some more, uncovering the diamond necklace symbol. Before revealing the prize amount, he told Sammie that he'd won. Next, he scratched off the prize amount revealing $40,000.
"He turned white, looking sick, handed me the ticket," Sammie told lottery officials. "We just couldn't believe it," Ernie said. "It was awesome!"
Sammie said, earlier in the day, before scratching the ticket off, they had just talked about how fortunate they are. "We count our blessings and are so thankful."
