SHAWNEE RESIDENT WINS $10,000 IN OCTOBER 30 EARLY BIRD DRAWING
November 18, 2011
For the past couple of years, Leonard Ellis has enjoyed playing the Kansas Lottery’s Holiday Millionaire Raffle game for a chance to win a $1 million grand prize. This year, the Lottery added Early Bird drawings to the game, which gave players 10 chances to win $10,000. Ellis didn’t want to miss his chance to win, so he purchased his tickets early. And boy, did it pay off! The Shawnee resident matched all numbers in the Oct. 30 Holiday Millionaire Raffle Early Bird drawing, winning a $10,000 cash prize!
The winning raffle numbers in the October 30 drawing were 022110 and 063816. Ellis’ winning raffle number was 022110, which he purchased at Bonner Springs Price Chopper, located at 501 S. Commercial in Bonner Springs on October 8.
“I didn’t even know I had won until I checked my tickets while I was at the grocery yesterday,” said Ellis.
When Ellis scanned his Holiday Millionaire Raffle Early Bird ticket on the store’s Check-A-Ticket, the message he received read ‘Sign back of ticket, redeem at Lottery.’ Since he had never seen that message before, Ellis wasn’t quite sure what to do next.
“I took the ticket to another store and got the same message, so I asked a store clerk to check the ticket for me,” said Ellis. “She explained I needed to go to Topeka to claim my prize, but she didn’t know for sure how much I had won.”
“We had an idea that we must have won $10,000, but I didn’t want to get our hopes up,” said Ellis’ wife Bonnie. “Once we got to Lottery headquarters in Topeka, we were shocked when officials said we had won $10,000. Our response was ‘Thank you, Lord!’”
Although the $10,000 win was a big shock for the couple and it hadn’t sunk it yet, Ellis said he would like to purchase a 50-inch television with part of the winnings. The rest he said, would be put into a savings account.
