SEARCH FOR BIRTHDAY CARD TURNS UP $1,000,000 LOTTERY SCRATCH-OFF WINNER
October 14, 2011
I was looking for a birthday card for my sister and some Lottery tickets to put in it,” said 65-year-old Carthage native John Giovo of his recent trip to Porter’s Wines & Liquors on Alexandria St. in Carthage. The retired paper mill mechanic took his time selecting the right card, but used a more casual approach in selecting his scratch-off tickets. “I said, ‘give me one of these and one of those and so on,’” he recounted.
Giovo soon learned his lone ticket -- a $5 Wheel of Fortune game -- was a $1,000,000 winner. “My heart didn’t skip a beat, but I thought the clerk was going to pass out when I showed him the ticket,” he said with a laugh. “We got [store owner] Mike [Liberatos] on the phone to tell him the good news, and then I left to pick up my wife from her doctor’s appointment like planned.”
Giovo and his wife, Cheryl, claimed the $1,000,000 prize September 28 at the Lottery’s Customer Service Center in Syracuse. The father and grandfather of two who survived a traumatic snowmobile accident in 1987 is the first New York Lottery player statewide to claim a $1,000,000 prize on the game show-themed ticket. The top prize is paid as $50,000 a year for 20 years. Giovo’s annual net check will total $33,015 through 2030.
“I don’t have any plans for the money right now,” said the new winner. “But, I dream a lot.”
Giovo is the second Jefferson County Lottery player to win a prize of $1,000,000 or more this year. William Traynor of LaFargeville claimed his $1,000,000 prize on the Lucky Tables scratch-off game in March.
