RUSHVILLE WOMAN CLEARLY SEES GREEN
August 1, 2011
Geraldine Helfer of Rushville is seeing dollar signs after scratching off a $100,000 Hoosier Lottery prize Tuesday. And it’s a welcome sight for the retiree, who at first glance thought her eyes might be deceiving her.
Helfer had good reason to doubt what she was seeing because she was on her way home from a cataract surgery follow up appointment when she stopped at Speedway at 8010 Emerson in Indianapolis and purchased her ticket.
“I told the clerk I didn’t care which five dollar ticket she gave me as long as it was a winner,” said Helfer. “Boy, was it a winner!”
Helfer has two grown children, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
“I’m a very laid-back person. I don’t need much,” said Helfer. “I’ll sock it back and help my kids if they need it.”
Helfer is the first person to claim one of 12 top prizes of $100,000 on the $100,000 Bonanza Scratch-off. Eleven top prizes remain unclaimed at this time.
