RUIDOSO MAN WINS $50,000 NEW MEXICO LOTTERY PRIZE
September 9, 2011
Aristeo Chavez, 19, found a $50,000 prize playing the New Mexico Lottery’s “Lucky Times 20” Scratcher.
“It was a jolt of joy,” Chavez recalled for lottery officials in Albuquerque Wednesday. “I was trembling.”
The Ruidoso man purchased the lucky ticket on Tuesday and played it in the yard of his parents’ home.
“I scratched it all the way to the bottom of the ticket, almost the last number,” he said. “I almost threw it away because I thought it was a loser.”
Now Chavez is in the market for a new truck. The young winner also plans to give cash gifts to his parents who came with their son to claim the prize. Felix and Amy Chavez are the parents of another lottery winner. Their daughter Alexandria received a Legislative Lottery Scholarship to attend Eastern New Mexico University where she is studying culinary arts.
“I think it’s a great program,” Amy Chavez said. “We didn’t have any way of helping her (attend college).”
Chavez bought his lucky ticket at Allsup’s Store No. 339 located at 2820 Sudderth Drive in Ruidoso. Previously, the store has sold seven large prize-winning lottery tickets paying between $1,000 and $100,000.
In July, Janet Coons of Ruidoso Downs won a $5,000 Scratcher prize. Her ticket came from Lawrence Brothers No. 1382 located at 721 Mechem Drive in Ruidoso
