POWERBALL JACKPOT ROCKETS TO $245 MILLION
November 2, 2011
The Powerball jackpot for tonight’s drawing has shot up to $245 million as strong sales in Massachusetts and across the nation are pushing the jackpot at a quickened pace. The cash option on this prize is set at more than $146 million.
The jackpot jumped $36 million when no one matched all the winning numbers in Saturday night’s drawing of the multi-state game. One ticket from Massachusetts sold at the Tedeschi Food Shop on Main Street in Milford won a $200,000 second-tier prize in that drawing and an additional $272,894 in lower- tier prizes were won across the state. Players across the country were collectively awarded a total of 1,601,929 prizes totaling $14,243,577 in Saturday’s drawing.
Powerball players in Massachusetts are expected to purchase over $1.2 million in tickets today. By noon, sales averaged $1,500 a minute with higher volumes of sales expected during the late afternoon commuter hour. A total of $2.8 million has been wagered in Massachusetts during this four day draw series.
The Powerball game is played with two sets of number pools: 5 of 59 and 1 of 39 (the Power Ball). The odd of winning the jackpot prize is 1 in195,249,054 while the overall odd of winning any prize is 1 in 35.11. For an additional $1 players can purchase the Power Play option which can multiply non-jackpot lower tier prizes by 2, 3, or 4 times.
