OVERLAND PARK RESIDENT KICKS-OFF HOLIDAY SEASON WITH $10,000 WIN
November 29, 2011
At the beginning of 2011, Misty Guilfoil and her husband Thomas moved from Kansas City to Nebraska to help with flood relief efforts. When they returned home in mid-November to settle down in Overland Park, neither had any idea that returning to Kansas would be profitable.
“I buy scratch tickets three or four times a week,” explained Misty. “And every other draw, I purchase a Quick Pick Powerball ticket.”
While out and about last Friday evening, Guilfoil decided to purchase a $2 Holiday Hounds instant scratch ticket before heading home.
“We did a few other things at home before I scratched the ticket,” Guilfoil said. “When I played the ticket, I realized that I had won $10,000. I told Thomas, but he didn’t believe me.”
After going back to the store where the clerk confirmed the ticket had to be claimed at a Kansas Lottery office, she began calling her mom and other family members to share the news.
“My mom didn’t believe me either,” said Guilfoil. “I had to show her the ticket! But once she realized that I had won, she was ecstatic.”
Guilfoil hid her winning ticket in a Shakespeare novel at home until she was able to claim her prize at Lottery headquarters in Topeka. The Guilfoils, who are currently looking for employment, plan to save their winnings.
The winning ticket was purchased at QuikTrip, 9200 Santa Fe Drive, Overland Park.
