LOTTERY SALES A RECORD IN FISCAL YEAR 2011
September 22, 2011
The Minnesota State Lottery set another sales record in fiscal year 2011 (July 1, 2010 – June 30, 2011). For the fourth consecutive year, ticket sales set a record, coming in at $504.4 million.
The sales mark of $504.4 million is an increase of $5.5 million, or 1.1 percent, from 2010. Record scratch game sales led the increase, ending the fiscal year at $354.8 million, an increase of $16.7 million, or 4.9 percent. Sales of lotto games (such as Powerball) totaled $142.3 million, down $11.6 million, or 7.6 percent, over the previous year. Progressive Print-N-Playgame sales were $7.3 million, up $403,000, or 5.8 percent.
Prize payments to players were a record $310.9 million, while the Lottery’s hard-working retail partners earned a record $30.4 million in commissions and incentives for selling Lottery products. This is an average of $10,000 per business.
“We believe that Minnesota’s sales growth can be attributed to a wide array of initiatives — one of which is providing our customers with a variety of games and promotional opportunities,” said Acting Lottery Director Jenny Canfield. “We have seen steady growth the past four years which has helped us to meet our important mission of raising revenue for the state of Minnesota. The Lottery’s dedicated staff, in tandem with its retailer partners, will continue to work hard to raise funds for the programs that benefit Minnesotans.”
During FY11 Lottery sales generated approximately $121.9 million for state projects and programs. The Environment & Natural Resources Trust Fund received $30.8 million, while the Game and Fish Fund and Natural Resources Fund each received $11.9 million. The General Fund received $67.3 million.
