LOTO-QUEBEC REDUCES THE SIZE OF TERMINAL-ISSUED LOTTERY TICKETS

Starting on Monday, November 28th, the size of all Loto?Québec terminal-issued lottery tickets will shrink, while maintaining excellent readability. This optimum arrangement of information will reduce annual paper consumption by approximately 82 metric tonnes, or 30% of the volume of tickets printed.
Smaller in size, but just as many winners – that's what consumers like.
“The new, smaller-size, terminal-issued lottery tickets will still produce thousands of winners every week!” said Robert Ayotte, President of Lottery Operations. “Recent tests have confirmed that the new layout and reduced format please our consumers and, even if tickets are between 22% and 45% shorter approximately, depending on the product, the main information on them remains easy to read,” he added. To that end, some major elements were moved or modified. For example, the number of draws, draw date and price of the bet were grouped together, the signature box was replaced by a line, and repetitions were eliminated.
Over financial year 2010-11, over 300 million tickets, all lotteries combined, were issued from terminals at 8,700 points of sale in Québec.
Later phases of the project:
Focusing mainly on tickets directly relating to bets, this first phase accounts for half of all documents printed on terminals, which are printed on recyclable paper labelled “FSC Mixed paper.” The next steps will target sports betting, draw results, validation coupons as well as administrative documentation printed on the terminal. The final phase will reduce the size of all paper documents produced on the terminals.
As one of several environmental initiatives put into place by the lottery sector to ensure the responsible consumption of paper, this effort is a concrete application of Loto-Québec's sustainable development action plan.
