LONDON MAN WINS $40,000 POWERBALL PRIZE
January 23, 2012
West Virginia Lottery Director John Musgrave announced today that John Hankins of London, W.Va., has won $40,000 playing Powerball.
Hankins, a W.Va. Department of Highways employee, matched four numbers plus the Powerball from the Saturday, January 21 drawing. He also paid the extra $1 for the PowerPlay option which increased his winnings from $10,000 to $40,000!
“I play the lottery regularly and I always watch the drawings on TV,” Hankins said. “I plan to pay some on my car, put some toward bills and have some fun with the rest.”
Hankins also had some advice to other players in regards to the Powerball PowerPlay option.
“It is worth it,” Hankins said. “You can’t win, if you don’t play.”
The winning ticket missed the $100 million jackpot by only one number. His single play, easy pick, $3 ticket had the numbers 12-17-24-43-44 with the Powerball of 7. The actual draw numbers were 12-24-43-44-45 with the Powerball of 7. No one won the jackpot on Saturday and the current estimated jackpot for Wednesday’s drawing is now up to $120 million!
Musgrave said that Hankins purchased the winning ticket at the Kroger in Smithers, W.Va.
