HOME FOR THE HOLIDAY PROVES PROFITABLE FOR ARIZONA RESIDENT
November 29, 2011
A trip home to visit her parents in Holcomb for Thanksgiving has given Marissa Burns a lot to be thankful for. On Sunday, the Glendale, Arizona, resident purchased a $2 Kitty Claus instant scratch ticket, winning a $10,000 top prize!
“When I come home to visit my family, I always buy a few lottery tickets because in Kansas, you only have to be 18 years old to play,” explained the 19-year-old. “In Arizona, you have to be 21 to play.”
After buying two tickets on Sunday, Burns returned to her parent’s home where she scratched her tickets. When she revealed a $10,000 top prize, she could hardly believe what she was seeing.
“My first reaction was, ‘Is this real?’” said Burns. “After everyone looked at my ticket, I went back to the convenience store and asked if someone could verify that I had actually won $10,000.”
After a store clerk confirmed her win, Burns made a trip to the Kansas Lottery office in Great Bend the next day.
“I’m really excited to have won,” said Burns. “This came at a great time. My boyfriend, Matt Clinton, was laid off work last month and I’m a stay-at-home mom, so money was getting tight. Now we can get caught up and pay bills.”
Burns and Clinton, who have a 2 year old son, plan to move back to Kansas at the beginning of the year. A portion of her winnings will also go toward moving expenses.
The winning ticket was purchased at U Pump It 202, located at 220 E. Santa Fe Trail in Lakin.
