GEORGIA NATIONAL GUARD MASTER SERGEANT WINS $50K AFTER TRAINING
October 19, 2011
The road home was paved with a lottery win for one Georgia National Guard master sergeant. John Cartledge, 51, was leaving a homeland security exercise in Florida when he won $50,000 on the Georgia Lottery instant game Hot Cash ticket.
A resident of Elberton, Cartledge won $37 during his first gas stop in Georgia. He stopped again closer to home and used those winnings to buy a Coke and a few more lottery tickets, including the one that netted his $50,000 prize.
“I couldn’t believe it,” he said.
After serving 10 months as a combat medic in Northern Iraq, Cartledge said the win comes at a good time.
“It’s awesome,” he said. “I haven’t been too long back from deployment in Iraq, so this will help me catch up with bills.”
Cartledge, who is engaged, also plans to use some of his prize to pay for his wedding.
TPS #0011, located at 805 N. Bypass E. in Washington, sold the Hot Cash top prize ticket.
Cartledge claimed his prize Tuesday.
