FLORIDA LOTTERY CELEBRATES 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF VOTER APPROVAL
November 4, 2011
On the 25th anniversary of Florida voters approving a state lottery, the Florida Lottery announced today it has earned its 23rd billionth dollar for the Education Enhancement Trust Fund (EETF), which benefits education programs at the K-12, state college and university levels. On November 4, 1986, nearly 64 percent of voters amended the Florida Constitution to include a state-run lottery. Since the Florida Lottery began selling tickets in 1988, its sole beneficiary has been education programs across Florida. For nine straight years, the Lottery has contributed at least $1 billion annually to the EETF.

"Contributing $23 billion to education in Florida has made a significant impact - from classroom construction to funding education programs. One of the most rewarding contributions has been the fact that 500,000 students have gone to college because of a Florida Lottery-funded Bright Futures scholarship," said Florida Lottery Secretary Cynthia O'Connell. "This is a historic milestone for the Florida Lottery. Our partnership with schools, colleges and universities all across this state began a quarter of a century ago, when voters approved the Lottery. We remain committed to serving our players, the 13,200 retailers who sell our product, and most importantly, Florida's children who benefit from ticket sales."

The Florida Lottery also announced today that players using the Apple iPhone or iPad can now download the Florida Lottery App. The App includes information such as: current winning numbers and jackpots, information on current Scratch-Off tickets, the latest television commercials, and a random number generator. The App was developed by internal Lottery staff. To download the Florida Lottery App, go to the App store on an Apple device and search "Florida Lottery." Look for the Florida Lottery flamingo for the official App. A similar App for Android phones will be made available soon.

"As we approach our 25th year of operations, it's critical that we effectively communicate with our players," said Secretary O'Connell. "The new App plus use of social media gives us new opportunities to share the excitement of the Florida Lottery with our players and retailers."

Starting in 2012, the Florida Lottery will begin a year-long celebration commemorating the 25th Anniversary. More details on the Florida Lottery's 25th Anniversary will be announced at a later date.
