DUBUQUE MAN GETS $15,000 HOLIDAY SURPRISE
January 10, 2012
When a Dubuque man headed out to fill up his gas tank for a holiday trip, he never dreamed he'd return with a "Betty Boop" scratch worth a top prize of $15,000.
Shawn Carroll, 40, said he went to Pioneer's Rest Area, 4900 Old Highway Road in Dubuque to fill his gas tank the night before he and his girlfriend left to see family for the holidays. While he was there, he decided to pick up a few scratch tickets.
"When I scratched it I was all by myself," Carroll said. "I looked at it and just breathed for a second, then looked at it again."
Carroll immediately ran into the other room to ask his girlfriend to look at the ticket.
"She was just in shock too," Carroll said.
Carroll said he liked the Betty Boop ticket because he always teased his girlfriend, calling her Betty Boop.
Carroll, who is a machinist for a company in Dubuque, scratched the ticket on Christmas Eve, so he was able to tell all his family about the big win the next day.
"Some people thought it was a joke lottery ticket," he said. "I said, 'No! This is no joke!'"
Carroll said he plans to use some of his winnings to pay bills. He claimed his prize Friday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.
