CITY OF SALIDA WINS COLORADO LOTTERY STARBURST AWARD
September 20, 2011
The Colorado Lottery has awarded a 2011 Starburst Community Award to the City of Salida for using Lottery dollars to complete the Arkansas River Whitewater Park and Greenway project. The City of Salida funded the project using a Lottery-funded Great Outdoors Colorado grant (GOCO) of $433,844 and $264,640 of Lottery-funded Conservation Trust Fund dollars.
“This project transformed a portion of the Arkansas River corridor from a neglected and all but forgotten area to a focal point for the community,” said Theresa Casey, recreation manager for the City of Salida.
The new area is utilized for large events including the annual FIBArk Whitewater Festival – and boasts a more than 1,400 feet of concrete walkway, substantially improved access to the river, public restrooms, a climbing wall, an outdoor amphitheater and a world class whitewater park.
The Colorado Lottery Starburst Community Awards recognize excellence in the use of Lottery proceeds in community projects implemented to enhance a community’s environment.
