CITY OF LAFAYETTE WINS COLORADO LOTTERY STARBURST AWARD FOR THE LAFAYETTE SKATEPARK PROJECT

The Colorado Lottery has awarded a 2011 Starburst Community Award to the City of Lafayette for using Lottery dollars to complete the Lafayette Skatepark project. The City of Lafayette utilized a Lottery-funded Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) grant of $577,000 to construct the skatepark.
The skatepark covers 19,000 square feet; 12,500 square feet of streetscape and 6,500 square feet of bowl structures. It was carefully planned to offer challenges from beginner to professional levels. It is common for 50-100 skaters to be actively utilizing the park at any given time -- many people stop just to admire the beauty of the park construction. With the granite, marble and regional stone feature it is considered a piece of art.
“Seventy percent of the cost of the skatepark project was covered by the Lottery-funded GOCO grant,” said Debbie Wilmot, marketing and communications manager for the City of Lafayette Recreation Department. “The grant put us in a position to afford to build a significant skatepark for many, many years to come.”
“We are very impressed by the fact that the Lafayette Skatepark has become an attraction that is utilized by people throughout the region and state,” said Matt Robbins, community relations specialist for the Colorado Lottery. “It is a hub for not only the Lafayette community, but also the skating community.”
