As a chauffeur, Warner Ashby of Rockville, Maryland, spends a lot of time driving in the area around Dulles airport. During one of those trips he stopped to buy a Virginia’s New Year’s Millionaire Raffle ticket. That ticket ended up winning $1 million!
“I read that a winning ticket had been bought at the 7-Eleven in Great Falls, and I thought, ‘Oh my gosh, I bought a ticket there!’” he later told Virginia Lottery officials.
His ticket, #310298, was drawn on January 1 as one of three $1 million winners. He bought it at 7-Eleven, 9908 Georgetown Pike in Great Falls. On January 5, he returned to the store to receive his check from Virginia Lottery Executive Director Paula Otto. The store received a $10,000 bonus for selling the top-prize-winning ticket.
The other top-prize winners bought their tickets in Clarksville and Stuart’s Draft. Six tickets won $25,000 each. Those tickets were bought in Chesapeake, Clear Brook, Hampton, Richmond, Burke and Glen Allen. An additional 300 tickets each won $500.
Mr. Ashby said he has no immediate plans for his winnings. He plans to keep working.
